Don't Judge a Girl by her Cover

Don't Judge a Girl by her Cover
Ally Carter

Soon Cammie is joining Bex and Liz as Macey's private security team on the campaign trail. The girls must use their spy training at every turn as the stakes are raised, and Cammie gets closer and closer to the shocking truth....

Okay this book i would put in the category of series where you started reading when you were younger, and loved it then, but now that your older, it doesn't have the same appeal. You keep reading the series though because you started it and feel dedicated to see where it ends. Other series in this would be the Clique, the pretty little liars, and the madison finn series (which i have stopped reading.)
As i grow older, i seem to be getting more interested in more serious and mature books, and this book doesn't satisfy. It's perfect for middle school students, and maybe lower, but now it just seems... juvenile. Don't get me wrong. I will probably still read the next one, but that's the things with some series. As more and more books come out, you become less interested unless it's a captivating book. Younger books are no longer interesting, and when a new book comes out in the series, i don't feel the urge to buy it immediately, and if i do read it, i usually borrow it. Now that's not for all series. The Uglies (which ended), THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS (GREAT SERIES READ NOW!), THE HUNGER GAMES TRILOGY (DITTO), and wake and fade series aren't bad at all, but then again they are more mature series.
Okay now back to the book. I really felt like the entire storyline was very boring, There were barely any action scenes and out of the ones there were, they were very predictable, like those scary movies where they'll be a scary monster behind the door. You know it, the guy next to you and the child who sneaked in to see the R rated film knows it, and everyone shouts don't open the door, but they do it anyways, and hey!, there's the monster.
It was also reallly boring.
So i recommend you to read the story if you not in high school, and you'd probably be interested, but if you are, i wouldn't recommend the series unless you already read it and need to read it because that's the loyal reader we are, i totally sympathize.

City of Ashes

City of Ashes (second of the mortal instrument series)
Cassandra Clare

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and fairies? Clary would love to spend more time with her best friend, Simon. But the Shadowhunters won't let her go=especially her handsome, infuriating brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil-and also her father. When the second of the Mortal Instruments is stolen, the terrifying Inquistor suspects Jace. COuld Jace really be willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

I love this book. I look this series. This, like The Hunger Game series, is also a trilogy, but also has great characters. So great it's so hard to choose your favorite one. I did tho, just barely. Simon. I love his funny attitude and him being the nerdy one of the group just secures his spot, at least for now.
Cassandra Clare does a great job keeping the suspense up, and keeping her audience interested. I read in in one sitting, and immediately bought the third one the same day. I forced all my friends to read it, and now they are Mortal Instrument Fans. Now i am doing the same. Read this book. If you done with magical creature stories, just read this series to leave that theme with a bang. If your not over them, then you should read this story anyways too. It's worth it. Trust me.

Catching Fire (The Real Review)

Catching Fire
Suzanne Collins

Sparks are Igniting.
Flames are Spreading.
And the Capitol wants Revenge.
Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. ANd there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol-a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create.
Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws hear for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without a shadow a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.
In Catching Fire, the second novel of the Hunger Games trilogy, Suzanne Collins continues the story of Katniss Everdeen, testing her more than ever before... and surprising readers at every turn.

Just the cover of this amazing book already tells that it's going to be exhilarating. All of the characters are so dynamic and perfect in their own inperfect ways. I want to go on a rampage just thinking about Catching Fire, but i am restraining myself so i won't ruin the book when you read it(when not if. This is a must MUST read.) Suzanne Collins did a great job keeping the storyline very interesting and kept it fast paced. Now i must say that i think that the first book, THe Hunger Games, is slightly more of a favorite for me, but Catching Fire is a very very close second.
Read this book. Of course after you read the Hunger Games. Now. I am not kidding.

Catching Fire

Catching Fire
Suzanne Collins

This such a annoying book. In a way that it's so perfect. It makes me want to SCREAM. SCREAM SCREAM. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I think it is superly infuriating how they make every character so perfect, not like in perfect, but so dynamic and great in their own way that you love each and every one of them so much it hurts. I want to erase my memory so i can read it over again with a newness and suspense as i did the first time. I will write another more indepth review of this fantastic book, but for now i am just telling you to go read it immediately! If you haven't read the Hunger Games, go and read that one now and then read Catching Fire asap! And if anyone needs to vent or relay over the book with me again, just leave a comment, or better yet send me a email. It's happyfaces2(at)rocketmail(dot)com.

Another thing. Peeta or Gale and why?

The Summer I Turned Pretty

The Summer I Turned Pretty
Jenny Han

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They ate the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer-they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

"I absolutely loved this book. Belly spending her summers with Conrad and Jeremiah, and experiences new things. Let me get this straight tho. She doesn't actually turn pretty overnight. It's more like an inside beauty kind of thing. There are flashbacks to previous summers, and you can see how's she's grown over the years, which is cool. She meets old friends, and gets more confident with herself. I wish i could have a life, or just a summer, just like hers, and i would be very happy and even though I do wish she picked the other boy....This is a must read book." -PaperMovies, author of the ThePaperMovieProject.

"The Summer I Turned Pretty offers a hard-to-resist combination-a beach house, summer love, enduring friendship. A deliciously sweet read." - Deb Caletti, author of Honey, Baby, Sweetheart, and Wild Roses.

"A great story about family, boys, and how so much can change so quickly, this book has what every girl wants in a summer." - Sarah Dessen, author of Just Listen and Lock and Key.

"If i could live inside this amazing book, I would. I would inhale the ocean air and soak up the sun, and i woul hang out all day with kind-wonderful-funny-awkward Belly and her two known-'em-forever buds, Jeremiah and Conrad. I'd watch the three of them stop being kids and start being more... and I'd hope hope hope that when Belly falls in love-'cause you know she will- she'd give her heart to the exact right boy." -Lauren Myracle, author of the ttyl series and Bliss.

Secrets of My Hollywood Life On Location

Secrets of My Hollywood Life On Location
Jen Calonita
Hollywood Secret Number One: When it comes to celebrity dating, many stars talk about the benefits of dating a fellow actor. Between you and me, that"celeb-only" dating speech is week-old baloney. The truth is, it's tough to date a fellow actor. There's too much competition over who's the bigger star and too much stress over spending the next six months apart when you ship off to shoot a movie in Bangladesh and he is on location in the West Indies.

The real reason why actors so often date other actors? We've got nobody else to date! Stars mostly spend time with other stars (and reality show hanger ons). A famous actress is unlikely to find her next relationship while pumping gas at the local MObil. That is, unless... you spend a few months pretending to be someone you're not. That's how I met a real guy like Austin. Now I just hope he can handle living under a microscope.

I liked this book alot. I was first hesitant to buy the first of the series, because i am not a huge fan of journal books, but then again i should have open it up and took a peek. It's not a serious book. No death, no depression, no drugs.... ( I shall call that the DDD's). But i really like the main character, Kaitlen's, boyfriend, Austin, because he seems down to earth, and like someone who would never truly exist in real life. I think that's what make it interesting, her relationship. I am more interested in that then her fued with her costar, or her brother being a wannabe star. It keeps me entertained.

I would recommend this book if you want something easy to read, and a light romance. I am glad i own the book, but if borrow it from the library, it's all good. As long as you read it. You don't have to rush out and buy it, but if you happened to be looking at the bookstore and find nothing really interesting (or your mom won't let you buy a hard cover being it's not worth the two hours I spend reading it.) pick up this book and go ahead and read it.

Boys R Us

Boys R Us
Lisi Harrison

Massie Block: After disbanding the Pretty Committee, Massie takes charge like Visa, forming OCD's hawtest clique yet: Massie and Crew. Even though money can't buy love, it can buy new friends... or at least model-actresses who will act like your besties until you get real ones. Lights, camera, MACtion!

Alicia Rivera: Hearts her new role as alpha of the SOul-M8s, BOCD's first ever boy - girl clique. But when the boys head back to the newly renovated Briarwood Academy, with the remaining Soul-M8s become 4Squares?

Dylan Marvil: Is happy times ten to finally have a crush who's crushing back, especially since they luh-v the same things: marshmallows, lip-kissing, and chugging Red Bull. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrp!

Kristen Gregory: Scored three goals on the soccer field last week- and Massie's crush... which earned her an ejection from her ex - BFF's hear. Can Massie forgive and forget, or is Kristen out of the game forever?

Claire Lyons: Has declared herself neutral in the battle of the cliques/ But dividing her time among Massie, the Soul-M8s, anc Cam has left her stretched thinner than extra-small Spanx. Can she get her friends to reunite, or will she be forced to pick a side once and for all?

The Clique... the only thing harder than getting in, is staying in.

First of all the last line, the slogan, is very cliche'. Just saying. Okay.... I was really bored with this book. In the beginning it was alright, with it going fast pace and thing getting revealed, but afterwards it just went down hill from there. The story was only mildly interesting, and i think it's one of Lisi Harrison weakest performances. I had to debate whether it was worth, actually finishing it halfway through, but i did. I did think the PC (pretty committee) and MAC (massie and crew) was a pretty cool thing, because the cliques hated each other, and so do the computers... but besides that most of the character are really shallow. I mean who hires friends?!?

This book i probably wouldn't recommend for some people, but some, like I, have started reading the series, and feel that they should remain faithful. But it you haven't read the series, or don't feel that commitment, i would say don't read this one. But i would recommend this series, to younger kids, in the older elementary grades, or early middle school.

Cindy Ella

Cindy Ella
Robin Palmer

Prom.
The best dress. The best shoes. The best date. Cindy Ella Gold is sick of it all.

Prom fever has infected L.A.- especially Cindy's two annoying stepsisters and her overly Botoxed stepmother. Cindy seems to be the only one immune to it all. But her anti-prom letter in the school newspaper does more to turn Cindy into Queen of the Freaks than to close the gap between the popular kids and the rest of the students. Everyone think she's committed social suicide, except for her two best friends-the yoga goddess India and John Hughes-worshipping Malcolm-and shockingly, the most popular senior at Castle Heights High and Cindy's crush, Adam Silver. But with a little bit of help from an an unexpected, and the perfect pair of shoes- Cindy realizes that she still has a chance at at happily ever after.

First of all, let me just point out that this book is very predictable. I bet anyone could figure out what is to happen just by reading the back of the book (or above). I mean you can just tell by the title it is a spin off of the fairy tale, so just by using that format, you can figure out the whole book. Secondly, the sisters are the total extreme of Prom. Well, okay, it's not like i have been to a prom (too young), but just common sense tells me that Cindy's sister are the highest form of extreme promist. They need a designer dress made especially for them so they have their mom black mail an designer. Not pyschotic at all. And then some people disagree with Prom, but they don't have to bring everyone's mood down with their disagreement. I mean so you don't like prom, fine. But don't go crazy because you can't convince everyone to be anti-prom.
This is not to say that i didn't like the book. (you're probably thinking i am crazy haha). It was sweet, and i liked the ending. I also love how Robin Palmer, like Sarah Dessen, uses the same setting for their books. (Geek Charming), though not as complex as Dessen's. So the extremes of the story i guess are only the makings of a story, and make it more interesting. It's just in real life i don't think teens would be as crazed. Okay so i liked this book. You should read it, but if you can't read it right now, you'll live. You can wait for this book, or even try the library.

Confessions of a Serial Kisser

Three Steps to Living your Fantasy!
1. Speak your fantasy
I, Evangeline Bianca Logan want a kiss. One spectacular, heart stopping, life altering crimson kiss.
Okay so i've had very little lip locking experience up till now, but i've got assets...
2. See your fantasy
He sweeps me into his arms, looks lovingly into my eyes; his lips brush against mine, warm tender, full of smoldering passion, and then... Oh, yeah. I can definitely see it.
3. Live your fantasy
That's it?! How????

The self help book made it sound easy, but finding a crimson kisser in the halls of Larkmont High is proving even more difficult than Evangeline imagined. What seem like good kissing prospects turns out to be fish lipped kissers, or misser kissers, or worse - ear lickers. Disgusting! But Evangeline is nost ready to give up. She really needs to believe in love right now. OR at least in the possibility for love. Or- oh, one good kiss isn't too much to ask for, is it?

I didn't really like this book. It wasn't textbook boring, but it was boring enough where i was entitled to skip a few words, sentences, paragraphs, pages here and there. It was like, oh a quest for the perfect kiss. interesting, but then it was like really repetitive and boring. My favorite character was Brody, because he seemed like the only down to earth, normal person. So my opinion of this books is that if you read it, okay, if you were to have a choice between this book and other, i would give the other the benefit of the doubt first, unless it is Generation Undead.

Secrets of My Hollywood Life

Secrets of My Hollywood Life
Jen Calonita

What if ... your picture were taped inside teenage boys' locker across America, you closets were bursting with never worn designer clothing, and the tabloids constantly asked whether you were losing you "good girl" status?

It's a glamorous life, but sixteen year old Kaitlin Burke, costar of one of the hottest shows on TV, is exhausted from the pressures of fame. Then she hits on an outrageously daring solution, one that has to remain top secret or it will jeopardize everything she's ever worked for.

I was surprise to know that i actually enjoyed reading this book. Let me get this straight though, it isn't one of my favorites, and it isn't the best book out there, it was just a nice break from some of the sci fi (City of Bones/Ashes/Glass) and serious books i have been reading lately. Now while the idea she comes up with is completely unrealistic, it is cool to imagine that those things would happen. I really like Austin. He seems like an all around good guy, tho i can see many him getting into some trouble in future books, just because he seems like THE perfect guy. I do agree on the fact that young stars today may have too much on their plate, and do need a break once in a while without being criticized and humiliated with phony and outrageous rumors. Then again it suppresses a guilty pleasure of mine too. I alway wished and wanted to be a celebrity, though from the way my life is heading, i can tell this isn't going to happen anytime (or ever) soon. This book, hopefully realistically, lets me imagine what it would be like to be a celeb, and compare it to my normal life. This isn't a must read book, but if someone offers to let you borrow it, don't hesitate to say yes.

City of Bones

City of Bones
Cassandra Clare

When Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder. Much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with odd markings. This is Clary's first meeting with the Shawdowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons- and keeping the odd werewolves and vampires in line. It's also her first meeting with gorgeous, golden-haired Jace. Within twenty four hours, Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in an ordinary Mundane like Clary? And how did she suddenly get the Sight? The Shawdowhunters would like to know...

I liked this book a whole lot. Clary, the stubborn teen who doesn't listen. Jace the one whose gone through too much heartbreak. Simon, Clary's best friend who will stick with her until the end. I wish, wish i had a best friend like Simon, which automatically makes him my favorite character of the book. Isabelle and Alec, "siblings" of Jace are hard to read, and are very unpredictable, but make the story even out. The world of magical creatures in this book, make me want to experience what they are experiencing. In the beginning, it is sort of confusing, but as you read it gets clearer. This book is very interesting. And is a nice vacation from having a sci fi/fantasy book being all about vampires. Okay, there are vampires in this wonderful, amazing book, but they aren't a major part... or are they? This is a must read, and though it isn't as great as the Hunger Games, it is still great. And Clary having red hair? so cool.P.s. i think the figure on the cover is meant to represent Jace.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Stephen Chbosky

Standing on the fringes of life...
...offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.
This haunting novel about the dilemma of passivity vs. passion marks the stunning debut of a provocative new voice in contemporary fiction: The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
This is the story of what it's like to grow up in high school. more intimate than a diary, Charlie's letters are singular and unique, hilarious and devastating. We may not know where he lives. We may not know to whom he is writing. All we know is the world he shares. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it puts him on a strange course throught uncharted territory. The world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends. The world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on the perfect drive to feel infinite.
Though Charlie, Stephen Chbosky has created a deeply affecting coming of age story, a powerful novel that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller coaster days known as
growing up.

I am required to read a book for honors english next year that is on the banned books list of 2008. I am very thorough, so i plan to read quite a few and pick from there. This is the first one i have read. (technically the 9th or so, but i mean read specifically for the project. The whole harry potter series is on there and one of my favorites, Looking for Alaska by John Green, and Just Listen by Sarah Dessen.) We are required to write whether or not we agree with critics and it's idea of unappropriateness. This book has many references to sex, drugs, alcohol, and so on and so on. I think the reason it may seem inappropriate is how the boy, a freshman, Charlie, goes about it. He seem so clueless, and maybe the way he talks or writes about these things makes it seem worse than it is. Or maybe it is just plain inappropriate. I am not sure but I still have to ponder about this subject longer.
Anyway about the book. I actually liked it. I stalled reading it (got it from the library two weeks ago, and had gone back for three trip before starting it.) because it was written a while ago. Some books are written today, but are given the setting of the past. Not this one, it was written i think ten or so years ago, so i automatically thought it was going to be boring. I made the wrong assumption. It wasn't boring much actually. With boring books i tend to find myself skipping pages and scanning. With this one, i found myself actually reading everything, and trying to figure out why Charlie is the way he is. The beginning was a little slow, but once I got started reading, i got really into it. I think that Sam is my favorite character, and i am happy i read this book, and even disappointed in myself for stalling for so long. So if you happen to see this book, read it, though it is a little, how should i say this... interesting... at times.

Ha ha. so here is something new. What do you think are the perks of being a wallflower? And how are they advantages vs. maybe being in the center of attention? What are the disadvantages of being a wallflower, and which would you prefer and why? Please comment below and share you thought and ideas. I'd love to hear them.

Prism

Prism
Faye Kellerman and Aliza Kellerman

Kaida Hutchenson isn't exactly psyched for the class trip to Carlsbad Caverns. Fourteen hours in a van with preppy jock Zeke Anderson and high school longer Joy Tallon? No, thank you.
But when a tragic and explosive accident turns the journey into a nightmare, Kaida would give anything to be back on the road. Stumbling at midnight through the unforgiving desert, Kaida, Zeke, and Joy take refuge in an abandoned cave... until the world goes from pitch black to blinding. The next thing Kaida know, she's back home in California and everything is just as it was before the Carlsbad trip ever took place.
Or is it?
Increasingly, unnerved by the distorted world around her, Kaida starts receiving unexpected help from mysterious people. Soom she must band together with Zeke and Joy to try to make it back to the reality she remembers... and to survive the one she's fallen into.
First i just want to give props to Aliza Kellerman for writing this book, even with the help of her mother, Faye. I just think its awesome that she tried to write a book, and succeeded. Writing is very hard, (at least for some) and she only being Junior in high school, has achieved so much already. Okay so about the book. I sort of, really liked it. Though it was a bit to short for my liking. I felt that if it were longer, and had more details, it wouldn't have felt so rushed, and then it would have been ten times better. Also there are some parts that don't make sense, like a certain word here or there that would confuse me, but then again it might just be me, and there are some information that was like, "okay, what did that have to do with anything?" but i still liked the book. My favorite character of the book is... Ozzy Callahan!!! If you haven't read the book, you wouldn't know who he was, cause he is not mentioned in the summary, but he's there. I also really liked how the main character, Kaida was unconventional. Starting with her name which is japanese, and her purple hair, to her dislike of a school trip. ( I mean who doesn't like time away from home with all your friends?) This is one book that i would really like to see a sequel for. It ends alright, but i really want to know what happens next (**** *********** ********************* ***********? *************** * ******** ****** *? ***** * *********** ********? these are all my questions that have been left unanswered. I would write then down though i don't want to ruin the book for you too much.) I would definitely buy the sequel if she ever decides to make one. There is a lot of good stuff that could make a good storyline. And last but not least, I would definitely recommend this book. The thing i disliked the most probably would be the cover, because it almost makes you want to walk past it, due to the oldyness of the cover. But hey, that's just my opinion. It isn't boring, and keeps me interested. So if you just happened to see it on sale, or in the library, pick it up and read it, It won't waste your time.

Bliss

Bliss
Lauren Myracle

With it's stately, ivy covered buildings, Crestview Academy seems impossibly to newcomer Bliss, but full of promise too. It's here she hopes to make the sort of friends she never could growing up as the lone kid on a commune. With her crisp new uniform and manners gleaned from the wholesome TV shows her grandmother permits her to watch, Bliss feels ready for her new life at Crestview. Until she hears the voice.
Crestview holds secrets in its stones, ghostly hints of a long ago death. Sensitive Bliss hears a voice that speaks of terrible things... and blood. Always blood. Her fellow students, with their sunny smiles and talk of makeup and dances, seem untouched by this darkness. Yet, as Bliss will learn, they too have secrets. When the simmering tensions of the present mingle with the dark secrets of the past, it is kindly Bliss who becomes the focus of a deadly struggle for power.
First of all i just wanted to point out this was not as bad as my friends said it was. She considered it Generation Dead bad, and it isn't even close to that. Yes, it is a little creepy. Yes, a little weird and scary too, but that what comes alongside the guidelines of a horror story. This book, ends badly. And was a little bit poorly written. Some of the events are unrealistic, but then again it's a horror story. I believe it is set a couple of decades ago, and things were different back then, if you decide to read it. It is a little racist, and I, being of the African American race , could handle it, so can others. It's is sad, but it's also the truth of what happened. So for me this book was okay if you read it, but not life changing, and the world would keep turning if you didn't.

Ten Things I Hate About Me

Ten Things I Hate About Me
Randa Abdel-Fattah

Jamie just wants to fit in. She doesn't want to be seen as a stereotypical Muslim girl, so she does everything possible to hide that part of herself. Even if it means pushing her friends away because she's afraid to let them know her dad forbids her to hang out with boys or that she plays the darabuka drums in an Arabic band.

But when the cutest boy in school asks her out and her friends start to wonder about Jamie's life outside of school, suddenly her secrets are threatened. Can Jamie figure out how to be both Jamie and Jamilah before she loses it all? Jamie's attempt to stop being the girl everyone expects her to be, and start being the girl she wants to be, a poignant, smart, hilarious, journey that will speak to all readers.

Firstly i like this book because it's based in Australia.  I mean who doesn't like Australia.... And it has a little deeper meaning, just a little, than it shows in the front flap, like racism between cultures. What hurts a little is that they didn't mention Timothy in the summary, he who is a large part of the book. One of my favorite characters in the book are Bilal, who is Jamie/Jamilah's brother.... He has a big ego... I would recommend this book, but it's not my favorite. It was a nice, easy read, that i wouldn't read again, but am glad i read it....

Vampire Academy

Vampire Academy

Okay, so i like this book. I would go even as far as to say i love this book. My favorite characters are Mason and Christian.... This is a must read. It is crucial for all living. I am not saying it's Hunger Games good, but it's very interesting. It seems to me that it is a mixture of all vampire books. A little twilight here, and little Marked there, and some Mediator spinkled in between. (tho not a vamp book, a ..... book. i won't ruin it for you) Rose keeps things interesting with all the flings she has with other dhampirs (half Moroi and half dhampir {Moroi [vampires] body guards}) and Moroi (vamps). It it interesting, and i love this book. I would read it again, if it would give me the same thrill as the first time.

5 stars and two thumbs up....

Pants On Fire

Pants on Fire
Meg Cabot

She's is not a liar. Katie Ellison is not a liar. At least that is what she keeps telling herself. But she can't exactly tell the truth, either-not when she's juggling two boyfriends, secretly hating the high school football team everyone else worships, and trying to have the best summer ever. At least Katie has it all under control (sort of). Her biggest secret, what really happened the night Tommy Sullivan is a freak was spray painted on the junior high gymnasium wall, is safe. That is, until Tommy comes back to town. Katie is sure he's going to ruin all her plans, and she'll do anything to hang on the her perfect existence. Even if it means telling more lies. Even if, now that Tommy's around, she actually-truthfully-having the time of her life.

I like the book, but it was sort of a stupid plot line. I think the drama with Katie and everyone around her, keeps the book interesting. I really like Tommy compared to the other characters in the books. I don't regret buying this book, but it just not as good as Meg Cabot's other books. I really like Avalon High, and the mediator series.

Catalyst

Catalyst
Laurie Halse Anderson

Kate has been stupid. She applied to MIT and ONLY MIT, confident she would get in. Now she's frantic and waiting, and so sorry for not picking a back up school. Her boyfriends going to Harvard, her friend is going to Stanford, and where is she going? She doesn't know. When her ex - bully/neighbor's house get burned down, he father, being the nice town reverend, take them in, and things get alot more complicated. Having to be at someone's beck and call is no fun thing.

I actually was dissapointed in myself for not reading this book sooner. It makes me anxious about my future, even though it 4 year away until senior year. There are some sad parts, touching parts, funny parts, and other parts. It was worth the read.

Lock and Key

Lock and Key
Sarah Dessen

Ruby, named after her mother, is going through some hard times. She seventeen, and her mother's disappear. Big Deal, right? well not for Ruby. She figure that if she keeps a low profile, paying the bills, and things, she can tough it out until she's eighteen, where she doesn't have to hide anymore. But one broken washing machine later, and she put up to social services by her landowners, and forced to move in with her sister, that she hasn't seen in ten years, who is also ten years older than her. Her husband Jamie and her take her into their rich, large, nice lifestyle, and things change drastically for her. She changes schools, changes her life, and most importantly, rekindles her relationship with her sister, Cora. oh i forgot, the hot dude next door, who has his own problems also. What will happen. duh, duh, duh!!!! Well read the book and find out!

This was a relatively good book, like usually all Sarah Dessen books are. It isn't my favorite of all of them, That would probably be the truth about forever, or just listen, or this lullaby. (my strategical reasoning for her books are that the thicker they are, the better they are). It's good, nice , interesting, and good for people who don't like to think to much, but still like to think. I would rate this and eight out of ten.

So Very Sorry

Okay, so i haven't posted in a while. I have been super duper busy. I had a soccer tournament this weekend, and STAR testing has started this week. I am so tired also. At least with the start testing i have two day to finish my homework due to my schedule only permitting three classes a day. half of what is the norm. I will try to post quicker, so don't fear.

ReleaseDates

So i was doing some research, and i found out a couple of interesting things. The sequel to The Hunger Games (my favorite book), Catching Fire, comes out on September 1. This book would start where the last had ended, which was a real cliff hanger. I also found out that the fourth installment of the Blue Bloods series would be released on October 6. Also this would not be the last installment.

North Of Beautiful

North of Beautiful
Justina Chen Headley

Terra Cooper has always been an almost. Has an almost perfect family except for her dad. Has an almost perfect boyfriend except that he tends to ignore her. Almost perfect herself, with a body to die for, and natural platinum blond hair, except the huge birthmark that covers half of her face. She had been trying time after time to remove it, but nothing works. She just covers it up with tons of makeup. But then she meets, Jacob, the asian goth boy whose problems are bigger than her own. Jacob makes an almost like Terra perfect in her own way.

I love this book. I know i know, it's kind of predictable, but a good predictable. Jacob is my favorite character and sometimes I wish he was the main character. It's a love story, and somewhat (quasi) light, but it makes you think differently about what you have. Are you annoyed with your dad's laugh convinced that it's sooo embarrassing, but then you read this and realize it's not too bad. How bout you hate your body, but some people have more problems that you, and you are shown this in the book. I loved it. I would recommend it for anyone who wants a good read. It not a challenging book to read don't worry. Okay maybe I am exaggerating a bit, it's not like she's homeless, but compared to the little things we complain about, a bad hair day, .... etc. she has worse problems, but the homeless in Africa still have it worse than her or maybe just living in an apartment. Okay so I am exaggerating alot, but that just me. Maybe it'll have a different effect on you, just read it. NOW. it's no hunger games but its still good.

Luisa has been asked to write an anonymous column about the Literary Challenge that her should is participating in. She is report about fundraising events from a women's point of view. Another writer is writing alongside her who will write from a man's perspective. The problem is, she doesn't know who he is, and that interfering with her love life. She is getting more experiences in one school year, that the rest of her life combined, and it making her mad. What's she going to do?

I like this book. It explains the conflict one girl is going through about her life, schooling, friends, her future,... the list goes on and on. Also it isn't a very serious book, so it can entertain the some of us who have short attention spans. My favorite characters are Tyler and Joey, they seem like nice people, and keep my attention. This book also keeps you on your toes. Usually with some books you can predict the ending, well with this book you can predict the ending, but it keeps on changing alongside your predictions. I liked this book alot and would recommend it to those who like light books, and light love stories.

The Book Thief

The Book Thief
Marcus Zusak

Death is around every corner during World War I. Germany is being run by A. Hitler, and your shunned if your heard saying one bad thing about the him. Things are tough for Leisel. Losing her mother and brother, and being sent to a new town, and living with new "parents." The only thing she found sancturary in was books. Though she couldn't read, it is in these book that start Leisel's own revolution.

I love this book. It is one of my favorites of all time. In the beginning, it is sort of slow at first, but it gets good. I found myself being sad, excited, happy, depressed, and desperate at many point during this whole story. I love this book.

Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars
Sara Shepard
In the summer between seventh and eighth grade, a best friend, a feared all knowing person, is gone missing, and lost without a trace. Tears are shed over Allison (the missing girl), and her family moves away from town. Years later, Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily, are all living different life, separating after the "incident". But things are coming to haunt them. When the new girl, Maya, comes to town, Emily is starting to doubt all that she has known. Spencer is competing with her sister. Aria moves back from Iceland, after she left during the fall of eighth grade, and is having problems with her new english teacher. Hanna is having problems, as her boyfriend states it, "respecting herself." Things in the small town of Rosewood are going to change, and not for the better.

I don't know how I feel about this book. It's kind of weird and addicting at the same time. That is all I am saying. Also the dolls on the front kinda of creep me out cause they match the girl on the back.

Short Story

For history, we had to write a short story about a Jacob Lawrence Picture. My group got the picture "Through the Forest". We then had to write a story based off that scene. My short story actually became a long short story, so I decided to post in on my blog. If you have time, give it a read, and tell my what you think about it. The end was a little rush due to the fact it was late, and due the next day. I hope you like it. Oh, it's about slavery because that is what we are learning about in class.

Jacob Lawrence Paintings “Harriet and the Promise Land”

Through the Forest

Away into the Night

“Please, no, I just don’t feel good. I only was going to rest for a few seconds.”  I say in complete desperation. I was standing with my head down,  because I had been caught sitting in the cotton fields, taking a break from picking the cotton bolls. Farming cotton was hard and tedious work, and to add onto that, my allergies were acting up. “Now, if I let everyone just rest, Master Covington, would be out of business, because a better plantation would have better slaves working, and more to sell.” Mr. Jones says with complete venom. I blinked twice as he brought his worn leather whip over his shoulder, towards me. I stepped to the side, causing the weapon to slice my shoulder, instead of my chest. “Oh you shouldn’t have done that!” he said with an anger in his voice, that told me he was dangerous. He brought the whip down onto my back as I collapsed on the dirt ground. He brought the whip down again and again, cutting deep wounds in my back… If I could I have looked up, I would have seen him smile. Suddenly, I am overwhelmed with the feel of unmistakable shaking.

I open my eyes, and see a pair looking back into mind. After a few seconds, the blur of sleep leaves my vision. “Are you alright?” Harriett asks me. I lift my head a few inches and taking in my surroundings. Low ceilings, rotting wood floors and walls, and the slight dim light leaking in through cracks telling me it was early morning. I rest my head back upon my bed, which was only an old sheet folded in half. I was not in the fields, I was in the slave quarters. “I’m fine now, just a bad dream.” I reply with a wince. Any slight movement brought pain to my back. I had slept to see a bad dream, but the experience was real. Laying on my stomach, the cuts on my back were still fresh from yesterday. Harriett noticed. “Sorry to wake you honey, I couldn’t handle the scared look on your face, figured you were having a nightmare.” “I’m okay, thanks for watching over me.” Since the incident yesterday, she had been tending my wounds, trying to prevent as much as she could from getting infected. “Penelope, we have to stick together. You know that, as much as I do.”

I had just been bought by Master Covington when he came to Mississippi shop for slaves from his plantation in South Carolina, from Master Brown a few months ago. That day was the worst day of my life, My mama, my papa, Sarah, Delilah, and Jeremiah, my siblings, were all separated from me. Luckily enough, Harriett, another slave just a few years older than my fifteen, took me in and made me feel as at home as a slave can. Slavery is what I know, and all I know. I was born in the rotten cabin in a women’s quarter, in Mississippi. I have been working a minimum fourteen hour day since I was seven. I have been a slave all my life, but never had to bear such a flogging until now. “I know.”

“I have good news.” Harriett whispers to me in an urgent voice. “Tonight, we’re going. A conductor from the Underground Railroad is meeting us at the abandoned house a few miles from here. You know, the one with the broken windows.” I instantly recognized it. Many of the slave sung songs referring to it. In those song, they spoke of a “drinking gourd” or the north star. In this case, the abandoned house was the “haunted house”. "Yeah. I remember.” “Are you going to be able to handle it?” she asked me as I sat up, to get my clothes on. My dress was made of old cloth, and had holes on the shoulders and near the seams. “I have too. I can’t handle any more of this.” I motioned to the open wound on my back. I lifted my dress above my head and slid it down. When the fabric presses against my cuts, my eyes instantly formed tears, but I do not let them fall. I will not let them fall. “Let’s go.” Harriett says. “Since we’re up we might as get our food and start early. Better not give them anything to be suspicious about.” As we walked over to the pig trough, I gave Harriett a good look. She was beautiful, inside and out. She was tall, graceful, and knew what to say, and when to say it. She was the person I aim to be. She had a slight bump that was her stomach. She was expecting, she had told me. I predict a baby girl, with her mother’s green eyes, but she feels like it’s was going to be a  boy. She doesn’t want her baby to be born into slavery, and will do anything to prevent it. And because Harriett is who she is, I will put my life on the line to make that happen for her, she deserves it.

We reach down into the trough where the overseers put the food, and pick up two piece of stale bread each, which we get every morning. I hand her my second piece, but she just curls my fingers over it. “You need it, sweetheart. We need you as strong as you can be tonight.” she whispers the last part. Since she told me about her pregnancy, I had been giving her half of my food. After all, she is eating for two. “You might want to save a bit for later too.” she adds. We walk away from the trough, and head towards the fields. We aren’t allowed to work together, so I won’t see her for several hours. We stop before we have to part ways. “ Tonight, we follow the drinking gourd, and find hope in the haunted house.” she sings to me in an angelic voice. She gives me a quick hug and turns to walk away. I wave at her back even though I know she cannot see me. I pick up my basket and start picking at the cotton bolls. I know I cannot sit in fear of a repeat of yesterday. I pick for a few hours before finally coming in hearing distance of another slave. “Tonight, we follow the drinking gourd, and find hope in the haunted house.” I sing. My voice quivers with exhaustion. Alexander, the other slave, nods at me, then smiles. I feel my cheeks heat up. Alexander was another slave my age, and I had seen him several times working in the fields, but never had we really spoken. He repeats the tune, and I hear the wonderful tone of his voice. It’s softness, almost as great as Harriett’s. I quickly flash him a smile, and continue down my aisle of cotton before Mr. Jones could accuse me of being off task. After a few more hours, and the sun is high in the sky, I hear a distinct sound of a bell, telling me it’s time for a food break. I walk back to the trough, and pick up two more piece of stale, which is this time soaked in sour milk. I eat greedily and get back to work.

By the time the sun is out of the sky, and a crescent moon is overhead, again the bell rings, to announce to end of the work day. The lump of bread in my pocket it tempting, but I know I might need it later in the night. My feet are soar with red blisters and are sensitive to the touch. I walked gingerly back to the quarters and happen to cross paths with Sophia, one of the elderly women who lived in the same quarters. “Tonight, we follow the drinking gourd, and find hope in the haunted house.” I sing to her slowly, clearly, and loud. A few years before I had arrived at the plantation, she had been caught eavesdropping on Master Covington, and was punished. They had cut off one of her ears, and poured salt onto it. It had become infected and she was nearly deaf. She looked at me in confusion, and I repeated my hymn. She then nodded at me and handed me a piece of fat. “No, it’s okay, you can keep it.” I respond to her. “You a growing girl, take it.” Sophia says with a strictness that you can only obey. I thank her and help her walk back to the quarters. I plan to give half  of the fat to Harriett, and save the other for later.

We reach home and begin to prepare for the night. Harriett, comes toward my bed and whispers to me, “I will wake up when we are going. Go to sleep.” I was planning on staying awake, but knowing Harriett, she was two steps ahead of me, preparing me for the night. I was too tired to protest, knowing I needed the sleep. I undressed and lay on my stomach. Harriett, softly took off the piece of cloth, stiff with dried blood, that she had bandaged my back with. She quickly left then returned, with the same cloth slightly damped and cleaner, and retied to so it stuck to by back snugly. “Thank you.” I say with tears in my eyes, and a sob in my throat. What have I done to deserve the care and love from someone like her? I quickly blink away my tears and swallow my sob. I will never let anyone see me cry. “Goodnight.” she replies, and then she kisses my cheek before walking over to her bed on the opposite wall. I start up onto the ceiling, and let sleep come to me.

“It’s time.” I wake up to the voice of Harriett, and I sit up immediately. I don’t say anything but glance at Harriett, then put on my dress. I stand up and follow her. I as I walk toward the door, I see a few others getting reading for the travels ahead, but one I don’t see is Sophia. She was just sitting against the wall watching the few others prepare. “Harriett, wait one second.” I say. She looks at me then nods. I jog over to Sophia. “Aren’t you going?” I ask. She looks at me with a smile on her face. “No child. I am an old lady, and will probably die soon anyway. I just want to enjoy the rest of my days as long as I can. Don’t look sad, Penelope. I would just slow you guys down. We will see each other in the future, if not in this life, in heaven. Now, GO.” I look at her for a few seconds before giving her a tight hug, and whispering, “Goodbye,” in her ear. I back up slowly, before hurrying after Harriett through the door. We leave in pairs, stealthy through the shadows. Quickly, but silently, we duck underneath the gate, and run toward the nearest bushes, our black skin serving as camouflage. We run silently through the trees, and after a while, we see the abandoned house in view. There is a candle in the window, along with a quilt hung over the gate. We jump over the gate and quickly knock on the door three times. As it opens, I think, yes, we made it!

I look around and see many others in the small room. Gregory, and older slave, stands by the unlit fireplace, Rachel, sit on her mother, Georgia’s lap. Walter, her husband paces across the room in front of them. I smile as I see Alexander, standing in the corner, with his friend, Calvin, glancing at me. I am glad that he had decided to make the journey to the North. He deserves better than slavery. I look back at the new figure that open the door for us. It was a woman, who stood proud, and determined, and she was looking at Harriett and me. “I am Harriet Tubman. I am going to help you escape to the North. I am the “conductor” of this train.” She spoke with complete confidence, and I couldn’t help but trust her. Harriett spoke next. “I name is also Harriett and this is Penelope.” she motioned towards me. “We will do whatever we can to get to the Promise Land.” She smiles a wide smile and says, “Welcome.” We sat down, and waited for the other to arrive. I prayed that all that chose to come were safe. When we had waited long enough, and some others had arrived, Harriet Tubman explained our journey. “ We will travel through the trees, every once in a while changing direction or circling back around. This will help throw anyone who follows us of guard. For protection we will pair up. One man, one woman. Any children with be added to these group.” She then paired everyone up according to age and size. I was paired up with Alexander, while Harriett was paired up with Calvin. I was frightened to be separated from Harriett, but happy to be paired up with Alexander. “I will do everything to protect you, alright? Don’t worry, we’ll be free soon enough.” he told me with assurance. He then took my hand and held it in his big, callused one. We left immediately, and kept a several yards between each pair. We walked quickly through the trees, Alexander never letting go of my hand.

For a few days, the same routine happened. Alexander and I would walk all night, hand in hand, following the others. During the day, we would hide in a safe house, and sleep. We would then awake, and repeat. Food was scarce, but we were used to those situations. We had a few scares with Slave Catchers. They were huge white men, with blood hounds that would go out and look for slaves. They were mean, and ruthless, with a taste for terror. Master Covington, must have found out of our escape, and had them searching for us. There were close on our trails, and we were instructed to make more difficult loops and paths to get the Catchers and their hounds confused. We still tread on, and walked on, because freedom was almost in our grasp. Alexander and I had gotten to know each other better, having spent all of our days together. He was very protective, and wouldn’t let me out of his sight. He held me, when he heard a suspicious noise, putting himself between me and danger. When I would have nightmares, he would wake me up, and then sing me back into a dreamless sleep. His when I would worry about anything, from my family, to the dangers laying ahead, or the ones following us, he would just smile, and all my worries would fade. One night, we were silent, enjoying the wilderness of the beautiful forest around us. We slowed down and were at the back of the pack. There was a stream ahead, one that others in front of us were  crossing and that we would have to. Harriet Tubman stood silently, herding everyone in the right direction.  Our skin as slaves were so dark that in the night we were almost invisible. We was as black as the night. Squirrels and owls danced on the trees above, while deer graze on the forest grasses. The tree shot straight up, green, orange, yellow leaves, hanging off their branches, into the sky, where the north star sat, leading our way to freedom.

All of a sudden there was a cracking of leaves behind us. “It’s probably just a squirrel.” Alexander commented, for he had heard the noise too, but non the less, put himself between me and the sound. I screamed as saw what emerged from the darkness of the trees. A hound came bounding through, barking with an evil glint in it’s eye. Alexander looked at me and yell, “RUN!” We both sprinted through the trees, but it was enough. The large dog, bit Alexander on the leg as he hollered out in pain. Calvin, who was a few yards ahead of us turned and ran toward us to help. The vicious monster, took another bite at Alexander, attacking his chest. He screamed in agony, as his clothing turned red with blood. The hound, kept biting, cutting, piercing, killing Alexander. Calvin who had finally reach us, took out his pocket knife and attacked the dog, until he lay limp on the ground. Alexander looked at me with a weakness in his eyes, and whispered, “I loved you.” I felt tears well up in my eyes, and unlike the other times, I let them fall. I said desperately with a sob, “No, NO, your going to be fine. Your going to be free with me, and Calvin, and Harriett, and we’re going to get to the North, and your going to live a great life. Stay with me… Stay with me.” He smiled but I could see the life being pushed out of his eyes. He had lost to much blood already. I was sobbing, with all the tears that had been dammed up spilling over. I kissed him gently on the lips, and then he breathed, “Thank you.” His eyes faded closed and his chest stop rising. . I put my head on his chest, not caring whether his blood got on my clothes. By now, Harriett had reached us, and Calvin and she were watching the scene at hand, but I didn’t care. After a few minutes, Harriett, touched my shoulder. “We need to go, they will be catching up soon. Come on, honey.” I lifted my head, and glance at Alexander. I stood up, turned, and without looking back, I followed the drinking gourd. Followed it until I was safe, until I knew that Alexander would rest in peace knowing I was free.

Ellen Hopkins everybody!

I have been lucky enough to be granted an interview with the splendid Ellen Hopkins. She is the author of the favorite books Crank, Impulse, Burned, Indentical, and Glass. She is a poetic and deep writer, making her work one of another world. Thank you so much Ellen Hopkins.

Q&A with Ellen Hopkins

Q: What was your inspiration for Impulse, Crank, and your other books?

Inspiration comes from many places. Friends, family, in the news. Readers' stories, even. With Impulse, it was because we lost two teens to suicide in one year, in the small valley where I live. With CRANK, it was a personal story (see below).

Q: Where do you get inspiration for your characters? Are they based off people you know, or made up entirely?

CRANK and GLASS are loosely based on my daughter's story of meth addiction. There are threads of real people in most of the other characters, too. I think all authors bring threads of real life into their writing.

Q: How do you start writing your books? Do you get an idea, and go from there, or research for the perfect topic?

Ideas come to me all the time. I have more ideas than time to right them. Once I know what I want to write about, however, I research meticulously.

Q: Are you a natural writer or have you taken classes to get to where you are today?

Writing with passion takes a certain intuitive talent, I think. I have taken many classes to learn how to write better, but the drive is inborn.

Q: When did you begin writing?

I've been writing pretty much since I learned how. Even when I wasn't writing to make a living, I was writing something. Poetry. Short stories. Later articles and nonfiction books, all before tackling novels.

Q: When you were young you were adopted. How was did that effect you? Did that have any influence on your own adoption?

I always felt wanted because I was adopted. Of course it stung a bit to think my biological parents didn't want me but I understood they were to young to raise me well. I suppose it influenced our decision to adopt Orion, because every child should feel wanted and loved.

Q: What are some of your favorite books and why?

I was a big Stephen King fan, and especially loved his earlier work--Thinner, Dead Zone, The Shining, Carrie. All are character-driven, which is important to me. A close second is Ken Kesey, who wrote One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and my favorite--Sometimes a Great Notion. Again, character-driven, and hard-hitting. Superb books.

Q: Many young teens are wishing to be the next Ellen Hopkins or Suzanne Collins (The Hunger Games). What advice do you have for young writers.

To read voraciously and write from the heart. Build multi-layered characters first, and let plot flow from character. Never try to force your characters into a plotline you conceive first. That's where you'll get into trouble.

Q: How were you and your books discovered?

I sat down at a writers conference with an editor at Simon and Schuster. She was critiquing manuscripts and I showed her a picture book, which she loved. However, she didn't edit picture books and asked if I had anything else. I had five pages of Crank written at the time. She liked it and asked to see it when I was finished. Two months later, I had 75 pp finished. I emailed her and asked if she'd like an exclusive first look. She said yes. Three weeks later, I had a contract.

Q: Why do your books tend to end in a sad tone? Do you do this for a certain reason?

I tend to write about difficult subject matter. Rarely do these issues result in "happily ever after." I hope I leave readers feeling like I gave them honesty and at least a small sense of hope for my characters.

Thank you very much for this interview Ms. Hopkins. I really appreciate it.

The Patron Saint Of Pigs

The Patron Saint of Pigs
Lauren Myracle

In this installment of "Let It Snow", Jeb's ex girlfriend is suffering severe separation issues. She didn't mean to cheat on him with Charlie, and she definitely should have died her hair pink. Now Abbie, is trying to survive the Christmas Season, without Jeb.

I really like the ending part of this book. It has all the characters from all three of the books meet in Starbuck's. She see's happy Stuart with Jubilee. The Duke with Tobin... This was though one of my most unfavoritest of the threesome. It was kind of slow and confusing. She makes it like that woman depend on man to live a complete life. It should seem that way though. I would give this book a B.
